The launch date for PS3 is finally official. Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. announced today that it would launch PLAYSTATION 3 in early November 2006 in Japan, North America and Europe simultaneously. A worldwide launch was a bit unexpected to say the least; nevertheless this is great news for us Europeans who are used to waiting almost a year to get our hands on Japanese hardware. For American gamers this news is pretty much as expected as a late 2006 launch have been the guess for some time now. The greatest thing is that, the final dev kit was really not given to the developers yet, and still there is some time for it. What demos kikizo.com saw were just running off of unfinished kits and still they were hot ! even without the final-PS3-CELL and RSX. To put it through, there are still over 7 months of time to finish up the games. And the world-wide launch...WOW ! now that was a pleasant surprise, I say yeah Sony is gonna really show the competition how to do a world wide launch, not with 0.3 million consoles in each territory, but with a whole 1 million of 'em. Msoft's worldwide launch even though it was weeks apart was miserable for gamers. Instead of having good supply in one country and then doing the same for the others...Nobody has enough x360's and many gamers were left without a X360 this christmas season. Another thing I think Sony is trying to do is settle this 91 million dollar lawsuit over the controler, actually they aren't trying to settle it.. they are trying to fight it. Also I feel as if the delay is to let thier system age enough to make the system cheaper to produce, so they lose less money than what they were supposed to before. So the longer they let you wait for the system, and more dated the spec's become... the cheaper they become with age. But this is more likely for using Blu-Ray (which is actually not going to be cheap wether they put it out now or later) and The Cell Technology. But the graphics card has been around for quite a while so it's nothing that should be a problem being cheaper to produce because it's a outdated card thats over clocked. Not to mention even if PS3 comes out in November... 360 plans on having some of it's biggest games out by then, Gears of War is sure to ring a few bells. Plus, we can't forget the shortages PS2 had when it released and if you think all of Sony's tech problems with how the systems hardwear/interface isn't reacting well together, etc. won't show up in final units causing some faulty ones in each batch... you are definatley highly mistaken! 53 -

We Love Katamari, MGS 3, and Shadow and the Colossus have given me more enjoyment than Geometry Wars and my slightly increased Burnout Revenge. Granted Oblivion should change that, but thats one game that I will truly enjoy out of a catalog of 7 360 games I have. Sony is consistently releasing games right up to death of the system, unlike Microsoft who basically gave up on the XBOX as soon as they announced the 360's release date. Hell there were still PS1 games being made when the PS2 was out. Microsoft just kills out support for the XBOX. I think the last game I bought for the XBOX was Ninja Gaiden Black. 59 -

I am very disappointed in Sony in this matter, and I think most of the pro-Sony posts in this forum have been placed by Sony employees or fanboys. People have been hearing about the PS3 since way back in 2004, and here we are 18 months later and we're still not close. How is that? I agree with one of the previous theories on this thread. The problem is the cost of building the PS3. They want to include everything in this machine, but the technology is so new that it would cost Sony about $800 to build it. The lies from Sony have to stop, and that's coming from a Sony believer. In fact, I am getting married in late June, and I've been planning on purchasing the not-yet-released by Sony (what a shock...) 55 inch SXRD HDTV (1080p input!) and teaming that with the PS3. The HDTV is "supposedly" being released in July, which is when I am getting back from the honeymoon in Italy. Now, I'm not sure I can count on THAT being released timely. I do NOT want to have to team up a DirecTV HD receiver with my current 32 inch non-HDTV. I'm not sure I can trust Sony anymore. PS3 launchBillGatesSucks 03.15.2006 15:03 The Spring launch would have been only for Japan which would have meant a summer or autumn launch for NA anyway, so in reality the delay isn't really that drastic except for the Japanese and is in fact good news for Europe who were expecting an 07 release. Sony admitted that the delay is due to finalisation of copy protection for Blu Ray which has nothing to do with problems with manufacturing as some were saying. I think the price of 50 000 yen ($425 USD) is competative with the 360 as long as it includes the 60gig HDD (Linux pre-installed) standard - and if it's required to run games then there's no reason to think that it won't be (and please don't say anything about memory cards not being standard, they are not required to run games only to save them. Or about the HDD being removable which means it won't be standard because they're going to come in different sizes which means you'll have to be able to get your old one out if you buy a new one). The free online service is very exciting. The fact that all games will be immediately on Blu Ray (and that Blu Ray manufacturing costs are the same as DVD) is good to know but not surprising. PS1 and 2 titles being up-scaled to hi res is pretty cool. Overall I'd say good news if only for the fact that it quells a lot of rumours. I would have liked to seen more news about tech specs and news about the controller but I guess we'll have to wait until after the launch of the final dev kits in June. Paul, how could you say you're "enthralled" about the delay of the PS3 and then say you are not a 360 fanboy? If you seriously think this is going to encourage anyone to jump ship to the 360, you're saddly mistaken. Buying multiple systems is becoming redundant as most 3rd party developers will be going multi-platform next gen anyway. Well, everyone knew the earliest release in the United States was Fall 2006, so you are idiots to even try to attack people for that. As for their lies, they don't even pertain to the majority of the market where I will once again refer to the obvious release date of Fall 2006. If you really want to piss people off go to a Japanese PS3 forum and talk smack to them. To you PAUL, You are very unique, I must say. Your awesome facade of intelligence could almost fool my little cousin, and she's 7. If your spelling errors don't make it extremely obvious then the many fallacies in your statement should make it apparent. Let's focus on a few areas of your argument, shall we? I think most people would call that loyalty. And as for us continuing to play our PS2 for a few more months, I am totally down for that. Kingdom Hearts 2 and Shadow Hearts 3 will keep me busy for quite some time and they are way more intriguing to me than your so-called "next-gen" graphics. I go for substance and storyline, not graphics, as I think almost everybody does. You could make a game look amazingly impressive but it won't be continually played if it doesn't have substance. Also, I guarantee you most of the people who own Xbox's are veteran gamers and already plan on buying a PS3. The XBox is still a relatively new product and has yet to make it with their break of huge game series. You may argue that Halo was popular and I would not deny that at all, but it takes more than one game to make a console. Playstation has a huge list of games that have received more press than Halo. When XBox can rival that then they will become more successful and I might have an interest in purchasing that console. But for me, personally, I am not wasting $400+ on a system I won't use as half much as my PS2. I would rather buy a new vacuum cleaner, it would get much more play than an XBox would in my house. In all of my experiences with Sony's customer service they have rocked it out hard for me, and I have only had to use that service twice and once was my fault. Everyone's dealings with those services are different so you can't make any generalized statements about it. Also, I don't want customer service for the next few months. As for your comment about still using six year-old machinery while waiting for a console that will be a year old, you pulled that straight out of your butt didn't you? PS3 is just so messed up right now, in fact, the lame design caused the high costs (who needs expensive BD-disks for games? games won't have more content more than 9gb for years, unless it will be packed more than 1 hour of useless high quality videos), and there are no games even nearly ready for the ps3 because of the bad dev-kits and hard development cycle, that's why it is delayed. I don't think it will be even better than x360 in terms of hardware performance, the cell processor is suitable for streaming media applications, not games. so go and buy an x360 and have fun with it. anyway, I have a PS2 right now, and planning to buy x360. 117 -

And PS2 was successful cause yeah the games, the console blew but Sony's influence and very importantly 1 YEAR PRIOR launch to Xbox gave them a huge advantage. And the success of PS1 which sadly influenced people to buy ps2's without trying the competition. I didn't care for the PS2 games, except GTA at the time, and guess what all those games went to the xbox which BETTER graphics. So I made a fair and unbiased decision of which console to buy. In fact I did buy a PS2 with MOH, GTA3/4, and a couple others. But then sold it and got a Xbox. If I want the small graphical improvement or Blu-ray if it even wins this time I'd wait till PS3's are 200$ 3-4 years from now. But by then prices will be so low and xbox err 720 will be near so I may not ****I don't let my console own me -- like ps1 to ps2 to ps3 #99, Those are you types of games which all have appaulling graphics compared to what they could have that your going to have to put up with for a year. Also they aren't my types of games. Hacks and Slashers, RPGs that you run around casting spells like a fairy, and any games with combos (that's sad) aren't my type. PLUS YOU THINK THAT EVERYBODY WILL FORK OVER NO LESS THAN 500 AT LAUNCH, or even get the opportunity to get one. Also a huge part of the market won't spend that much until it goes down to 3-400. By then 360 and rev. will be so low in cost it'll look more appealling. Also 360 having a graphical advantage for a year at PS3 launch and probably all of 2007. So by time the add-on releases (which will be cheaper than regular stand alone HD players from what I hear) I can add it on if it be comes a nessicary product to have. But at this moment the HD players becoming a must needed device has yet to be seen. For all we know either format if not both could flop horribly... because this is not as drastic of a step as vhs to dvd. So I'd rather have a HD player add on that if it does in fact bomb, if I didn't buy it I don't have to worry about it being around my system yet alone built into it. Yes, the Ps3 will be better, because it is coming out ONE YEAR after the 360. It should be better. But all the sweet games are coming out for 360 and ps3. I dont like Japanese RPG's that much, and look at what 360 will have soon: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion on Tuesday of next week, Gears of War on 6/17, Saints Row (which is, yes, a GTA look alike, but I think it will blow it out of the water), and MAYBE Halo 3 this year, but probably not, I wont get my hopes up. I am not lying guys, 360 rocks, except for the not-needed language online, GRAW and Call of Duty 2 are really fun. I just want you to consider something guys, instead of wasting 8 months of your life waiting for something good (which it will be, if you are that focused on it, keep waiting). Our launch window always has been 3 to six months afterwards so I am not surprised at all. In my mind I always pictured the U.S. launch in November. So one region gets screwed over, but they are patient and realize it is in their best interest to wait. You don't see them complaining. Europeans finally get the love they so deserve, finally all is right. XBOX fans need to stop all this hate. You guys must be disappointed with your system because you actually find the time to flame PS3 sites instead of playing? Not dissing Xbox fans, but my Xbox (not 360) rarely gets used. I played DOA4, Ninja Gaiden, Halo, and PGR, but always found myself turning on my PS2 and Gamecube more. I guess I just like the exclusive titles that the PS brand has to offer. It is kinda sad too because XBOX was more powerful than the PS2, but just didn't have enough killer games to justify turning it on. (IMOP) The best use for my XBOX is a next-gen jukebox. There are the first actual in-game screenshots of an actual PS3 game running on a current PS3 Dev. Kit. The game is about 50% done and unfortunately for Sony fanboys it is underwhelming to say the least. This game is not living up to the PS3-hype at all. There is plenty of time between now and November...Sony better get on the ball. Its a first party title by the way..being made by SOE. I think the webmaster will post my submitted news in the morning. As I just submitted it moments ago. So far not so good for PS3. This game is a long way away from Killzone and MGS4 tech demo quality. Before the PS3 fanboys start to flame this is running on a PS3 beta kit, final kits for PS3 will be distributed in June as I'm sure we are all aware. I would also like to point out..at E32005 X360 games were on alpha kits and they all looked better than this game. I can only think of a few minor issues like.. --Overheating - was found out to be a big manufacturing error in a factory where they left a thin layer of aluminum on the CPU's so it cooked itself --Disc Scratching - Hello don't move the friggin box while running a game. That's why it happens --Production speed is a little troublesome. MS very recently bought another factory so production should meet all pre-orders very soon. I'd rather have it out a month earlier than waiting a month to pile up consoles in trucks waiting. -- I DON'T SAY I'M NOT FOR ANY ONE CONSOLE. I've had both a PS2 and Xbox. I only own a 360 right now because I made an unbiased, fair, and logical decision. Which I have always said whenever I posted about it. Now with the 360 being released a year earlier than the PS3, and with the upcoming killer apps and exclusives, not to mention the cheaper price tag, the 360 has every chance of being more successful than the PS3 this time so stop being so narrow minded you fool. PS3 fans were bashing all of the MS sites straight through the Xbox 360 launch, so they should expect the same. I check out this site periodically because I still plan on getting a PS3 when it comes out. Why do the PS3 fanboys throw so much support behind Sony when they have a history of deception? Check out the (ps3 portal also) forums from one week before the "delay" announcement. An overwhelming majority expected something in the US this summer and many claimed they'd stop supporting Sony if they don't have hardware on the shelves by year end. After the announcement, the fanboys began saying, this is what we thought all along...reality check. Face it...most of you won't have a console until 07. Why do you continually claim it to be fact that the PS3 is more powerful when you have absolutely no idea how this "power" will translate into real time graphics capability? People keep reciting the Sony statistics when they have no idea what this will mean to the games. Untold Legends looks like garbage. If the only reason for the delay is the blue ray drive, how much more powerful do you think the final dev kits will be? They were on track for a Spring launch before the blue ray delay right? Then we should be seeing some screenshots. I couldn't believe how many of you were touting the Killzone demo as in-game graphics. The Xbox (which I don't own) is more powerful than the PS2, but you don't seem to mind that. I don't even own an xbox so I could care less because the xbox games aren't as fun. Before you say the PS3 will kill the xbox 360, just accept that its a pipedream until you can play a realtime demo on the hardware. 248 -

When the PS3 comes out....i will have one....when the revolution comes out.....i will have one as well. Im only going with what info is out on the 360. And with what info is out.....Each PS3 is going to cost Sony around $900 to make. This has been reported by Merrill Lynch, who is the financial company representing Sony. And there has been a lot of talk of Sony only going to produce a million or less this year, and really dont think Japan will be left an equal share of those PS3's...more likely all of them. And here is a bit of info that will shed some light on when the PS3 will be here in the US. When the 360 was announced it will be available, you could start to preorder right then and there. The PS3 has now been announced, yet none of the places are excepting preorders....I wonder why this is????? I know the BDP-S1 Blu-ray player is targeted to ship in July for about $1,000 and the costs of the cell processor are rumored to be very high. It doesnt seem very realistic to have the cost be in the 600-700 range, but I guess anything is possible. I just hope the thing doesnt as much $600. And i really dont want to pay even higher game prices. The movies being released in bluray arent very inviting. Crash and Lord of War, priced at a $39.99 SRP, and The Punisher, Saw and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, marked at a $29.99 SRP. Total Recall, Stargate and Frank Herbert's Dune priced at $29.99, while The Devil's Rejects will be available at a $39.99 SRP. Looking at that you'd think a price tag of 10-15 bucks more than a 360 third party game. $74.99 for your average PS3 game...thats starting to get pretty steep. It would be pretty amazing to see a price tag of $499 for the console and $59.99 a game. That would be sweet! 269 -

Target consumer market for a video game console are not going to pay over $500 for a PS3, that's fairly obvious, and Sony knows it. If the PS3 cost Sony $900 to manufacture and they had to turn around and sell it for almost half that, they would have scrapped it while it was still in R&D and went the MS route by slapping together a bunch of off the shelf products. Unregistered - Notra 03.20.2006 12:39 Well I got issue #156 of Game Informer this week in the mail, I read page 18-19 which stated that Microsoft and Bungie said that Halo 3 doesn't exist and that their working on another title. I don't really care for the Halo series and don't see this as news but Bill Gates lied in Time Magazine about the project but it would seem that Bungie didn't lie about their not being a Halo 3 since they stated that their working on another title. Anyways I plan to buy a ps3 and 360 but it seems pretty weak that Bill Gates would have to say that in a well known magazine. I don't really care about this console war between Sony and Microsoft it's like both companies are acting like spoiled brats fighting to gain dominace on the market, in my opinion their not doing any for favors gamers at all. 276 -
Unregistered - gamestation2000 03.20.2006 17:42 I beleive Bill Gates over stepped his boundaries when he said that Halo 3 would release on the same date as the PS3. Bungie was kinda pissed because they didnt want any information being said about what they are working on next. Bungie IS working on the next Halo....sorta. Its not supposed to be the "next" Halo in terms of story line. Bungie has revealed some info of their next venture, and it seemed to be more of a prequel to the Halo series or even a chronicles of some sort. I believe its called forerunner or something of that sort, and that may not even be anything close to the title. Bungie likes to keep a serious hush-hush on their doings and didnt want people to think their next project would take off where halo 2 ended. It would seem the next Bungie project is definitely going to have Master Chief in it, but I dont think you'll see just a really highend graphical version of a continuation of Halo. I believe Bungie is attempting to take Halo in a new more next-gen direction. As to what that really is.....E3 will soon let us know. 277 -

No one really thought this time last year that the 360 would be available for sale before 2006, but slowly it became a reality when more and more info on the console was being made. And this would be a time that sony was probably well past the R&D stage and simply had no choice but to continue on with their plans and just hope all goes bad with the 360 (even though they didnt rely on hope and started throwing as much mud as possible in the 360's direction). Even Ken Kutaragi has gone on record saying he believes that gamers will be willing to pay whatever price they put on the PS3...because as he also said, it will be the most ultimate gaming experience ever! I hope your right though, because a $500 price tag would be steal just for a bluray drive. Much like the PS2 is giving a lot of credit for DVDs finally passing up VHS for the majority of households. But the PS2 was only $300 at that time and to get a DVD player at that time was in the range of $150-$200, so the paying an extra $100 dollars for a gaming machine that also played DVDs was a pretty easy choice for a lot of parents to make. This time around the numbers dont come nowhere near that close....ie pay $500 dollars for a bluray drive that cost $1000.....more realistic numbers would be more like paying $600 for what hopefully reduces in price, by the time the PS3 will be for sale, would be an $800 bluray player......only time will tell though. 278 -

Anyway, what I meant was if ML is correct in their assesment of what the PS3 will cost to build (which I don't think they are), then even if Sony sold it at a $200 loss on each machine, that would mean they would have to sell it for about $700. Here are the main problems with this scenario 1) Sony cannot sell a game console at that price, it's just too high 2) Even if they DID mange to sell at that price, it's still a $200 loss per console - a million unit launch would mean a 200 million dollar loss. I don't know what the mark up on games is, but it would have to be kind of high or sell a LOT of games per console to make that money back. Sony would have figured this out during R&D, before any real investment had been made, and scrapped the approach of using new technologies. As far as I know, the Xbox division of MS never made a cent of money in its 4 years. This is why I think Bill and co. are going to have to be more careful this time around with price drops to keep the investors happy. 279 -

And I really think Sony (with the mind set of not being beat to the market by the 360) was willing to build as big and bad as a machine as possible and willing to throw a price tag of around $600-$700 and expect gamers to pay this with the promise of it lasting around 12 years. 280 -

BillGatesSucks 03.21.2006 14:52 Sony no doubt is counting on the Cell and Blu Ray doing well in other markets to defer costs of production. So, maybe the gamble isn't really how well the PS3 will sell, it's how well will new Cell equipped HDTVs and online servers sell. A 2x Blu Ray drive is fast enough to play Blu Ray movies, barely (2x would be something like 72 MB/s and a Blu Ray movie needs a minimum tranfer rate of something like 54 MB/s) but it would be slower than a 12x DVD drive (what the 360 uses) which is about 121 MB/s. So, I'm hoping that if Sony expects a 12 year life from the PS3, they'll at least go with a 4x (144 MB/s) Blu Ray drive. 284 -

When the 360 launched all they ever stated was that they were launching in the 3 major launch countries in a months time period...ie, USA, Japan, and Europe. Other countries like Australia and Korea where launched later and really werent even discussed until they were actually being launched. I guess thats how MS goes about it. Sony on the other hand doesnt like to give specifics and likes the idea of it sounding bigger than it really is....."World-wide launch" This is exactly why you must take everything Sony says with a large grain of salt. Great game company...Yes, but it is certainly hard to read the fine print that Sony seems to have everything they say. The fine print for this one reads as follows: Dont worry citizens of Japan you will get every available PS3 that when the launch comes, we just dont want other buyers to get impatient with us. If they think its coming out november then they are more likely to wait to buy their next gaming console because we can afford to lose any ground to the evil empire....and im not talking about the yankees....end fine print.
