At the recent CEATEC event in Japan, Sony Corporations Chairman and CEO, Sir Howard Stringer, talked about Sony’s role in the Consumer Electronics world, and how PSP, PS3 and the CELL will bring us the next generation of digital entertainment.
"The Cell microprocessor which Sony developed with IBM and Toshiba clearly sets the PS3 apart. It is 35 times faster than the processor in the PS2. 10 times the power of a standard PC and twice the processing power of Microsoft's new Xbox360. This technology allows for super computer like performance, moving quality images and the degree of realism that is simply amazing in a home gaming device. It's been said in the press that no other chip in the world can touch it. We are confident that this is true." Xbox live, ok, they had that before, maybe a new version now, but not next gen. Hmm...still dvd, not a revolutionary processor, multicore has been done before, same controller, although wireless, so is WAVEBIRD. You guys are Idiots. Ps3 is truly next gen. Now, here is the thing, ps3 showed some real time graphics, and they showed some pre-rendered graphics. They said, the games will look like that, you know what, maybe they will, maybe they wont, but will be close enough. Now, 360, showed actual gameplay, but this is where we differ people. The gameply graphics on the 360 do not meet my expectations of a truly next gen console. So, what I am going to to is, wait for PS3 and see if they can actually deliver on their promise of the graphic and gameplay experience, instead of hurryng up and buying an xbox360. If I see that the PS3 couldnt live up to the expectaions, then who knows, maybe I'll get an xbox 360. Its not that big of a deal. You guys are acting like your mom and dad made the 360. Blu-ray and Hd-dvd are both High def dvd's, They are both competing to be the next format and Blu-ray is winning the war with leaps and bounds. Blu-ray is superior in every way to hd-dvd. Blu-ray can hold much more data, its using the Durabis coating from TDK which gives much more protection from scratches and dust (hd-dvd isnt) The copyright protection against piracy is better with Blu-ray which is important to studios and to us that actually buy movies and music with out ripping them or purchasing pirated copies. JVC created a hybrid disc that plays both dvd and Blu-ray content on the same side to ease the transition from standard dvd to Blu-ray. Every one of the Computer makers, including Dell and HP (the 2 largest are backing blu-ray, everyone of the Movies studios are backing Blu-ray except Universal, Warner and New Line. Paramount just announced they are now backing Blu-ray and Warner brothers and New Line are expected to release a statment anytime stating they are switching as well then Universal is said to follow. That will give Blu-ray 100% studio support, All the electronic companies are supporting Blu-ray except Toshiba, and NEC. Its being said all over the net that hd-dvd has pretty much lost already and may never even make it out. Even the Music industry is embracing Blu-ray, Universal Music (one of the largest music companies) is backing them and so is Sony music, Epic records, Columbia records, and BMG who just merged with Sony in 2004. So there you go. Blu-ray is in place to be the next standard for Movies, Games, Computers, Music and more. Oh and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd (owners of the Panasonic brand) have established a new technology which will lower the production costs of next generation Blu-Ray discs to almost the same level as current DVD production costs. Dvd plays didnt play VHS and VHS wouldnt Play dvd. This is going from DVD to Blu-ray which is just a High def DVD. Now, since JVC created a hybird, that means that the can make just hybrids to start out which will play in a current dvd player with the red laser but still play in the Blu-ray player using the Blue laser and so people wont have to buy one or the other. And if people dont want to have to buy movies over again in Blu-ray, they wont have to since the Blu-ray players will play current dvds. So as you can see the transition should be very simple to the point that many may not even notice much of a switch. 32 -

Microfuks only wish they could build up hype as good as Sony does. Everyone knows that, so quit making that your #1 point every time you FagBox036 fagboys mention Sony. It's nothing new. What you fail to realize is that when Sony builds up hype, it's because they have to. Every company out there does it. Microfags does the same thing to one extent or another. So what, if they didn't deliver with everything they said about the PS2, 9 1/2 out of 10 (the 1/2 being a midget) still played the hell out of there PS2 with their LARGE selection of games. Nintendo promised online play and never came through. Who gives a sh!t? I own a GC and still love Nintendo for the innovations they have brought to the industry. I respect Sony for giving any developers a chance to make games for their console, something that Nintendo was not too fond of doing in fear that it could hurt their image (I'm sure they won’t be thinking like that this time around). Microfuks has brought absolutely nothing new to the industry (they gave you better service for online gaming. Big F@$king whoop!) Still Nintendo and Sega were the originals. Oh and lets not for get First Person Shooters (Which is all they ever make or at least seem to focus on) Pathetic. All the X-twat fanboys have been bread to hate everything else and for this I'm not sure whether I would want to play online with a bunch of twat face ZOMBIES playing a FPS game like HALO 2. In the end though I'm glad all three systems can coexist. Competition drives the future, and that's exsacly where Sony was thinking when they created the PS3 (the future of gaming). Think of it this way. Sports. How F#*king boring would it be if there was only one sport in this F'ed up world. Instead you have a sh!t load of different types. So in conclusion pick the sports (consoles) you like, pick your favorite teams (games) and enjoy the hell out of them. Theone odd curveball that came from nowhere was the Revolution controller. That is the one thing that may prove to be the real next generation innovation. The PS3 can display to two screens - thumbs up The eyetoy was quite a good inovation the current generation.. and they will obiously improve on it. All that I see from MS is - Hell - Sony has an eyetoy - so lets copy it quickly and claim that it is innovation. Sony has a real next gen CPU so lets get at least a multi processor so that we can pretend to do the same. All copy - no innovation. And then the revolution controller was announced - the one MS guy applauds - and the next week the VP tries to downplay it and pretend that they tried it as well. I don't think the ps3 will be over 500-600 or 400 right now the Xbox 360 is priced at 399.99 for the premium edition console and Sony excutives are going to watch microsofts sales as a hawk to see if the price for it is attractive or unattractive to the consumer. I heard games for the next gen consoles will be $59.99, normally I would be pissed at this type of price but if game developers put more into the games it's worth it to pay that price. Who knows who'll sell more consoles microsoft, Sony, and maybe Nintendo whoever steps up to make better games is going to appeal to the people, to tell you all the truth innovative games sell more than average games. If Sony takes their time right now the games in the trailers will be beyond what was seen at E3 or TGS, maybe the graphics and so on will be revolutionary who knows, it's really up to the developers. Nintendo on the other hand is playing it smart because no one knows what their doing with the games so they can keep their ideas safe, Nintendo is probably going to make a come back for non-gamers and gamers maybe they will, maybe they won't this I believe in Nintendo this time. Sony's giving game developers time so they can put their ideas and stuff into the games and adjust to the console, I mean Sony game developers couldn't put all the things they wanted into the games because they had limited tools. If you all saw The Next-Gen Getaway video, which btw featured HDR lighting and such, it was all done by the CELL without the graphics chip RSX. That pretty much tells you how powerful CELL truly is. RSX is said to be faster and advanced than the current high-end video card king, Nvidia 7800GTX. Any graphics rendering would be done by the RSX therefore developers would only utilize 1 SPE to help render the effects although using 2 SPE's would be a tremendous help to the GPU. If all the graphics are done by RSX without the help of CELL, there would be extra SPE's for AI and Physics calculation. We all know there will be 7 active SPE's. 1 SPE is almost guaranteed for sound processing. The remaining 6 would be utilized for physics and AI. If what is said about AGEIA NovodeX using only 1 SPE is true, the usage of 2 SPE's for physics would mean better graphics and physics in games. AI most certainly would only use 2 SPE's at the most and that would leave 2 remaining SPE's. Which will be used to aid graphics rendering eventually if it won't be used for any other work. Not to bash X360, but it's just basically a custom-built computer with innovative graphical features. It's GPU; Xenos, will be doing all the graphics all by itself. The CPU will be a tri-core CPU sharing 1mb L2 cache. In developers' world, that doesn't sound good. And X360 does not utilize the next-gen optical format. Disc capacity is already an uprising issue. If you take a look at Xbox 360 games, you would notice that most of it's games looks good and comparable to the new PC games. Quake 4 on Xbox 360 looks just as good as it's PC counterpart. However, it is worth mentioning that the game will be running on locked 30fps. Everyone who is an avid gamer would tell you that 60fps is the sweet spot and running a current-gen PC game at 30fps on a next-gen console is a sign of weakness. As FPS makers, they should know 60fps will always be preferred over 30fps. Although I know some of you might disagree and say that it's not optimized(which I think is *expletive deleted*), I am merely stating that X360 games looks just like current-gen PC games. The difference between X360 trailers and proved to be real-time PS3 trailers is that X360 games looks like details-cranked-up PC games whereas the PS3 games looks like pre-rendered movies. For me games sell consoles not what they have under the hood. Hyping the power of the hardware rather than letting the games do the talking does nothing for me I'm afraid. It's a pretty unsophisticated way of marketing the console, engineered to whip the fanboys into the sort of behaviour you see at the minute. The nature of fanboys though is that even if the system doesn't come any where near their expectations for it they will accept it anyway and just get on with it. Most of those who post the tech specs and bang on about the power of the PS3 have already decided which console they will own anyway. All the press statements do is allow them to justify their decision to themselves. If it turns out to be less powerful than stated they will just find some other drum to beat to justify their loyalty. Lets just hope this discussion remains civilized though. There are far more games than that, that are exclusive AAA titles, those are the games I want, GT5, MGS4, DMC4, GTA and lots more plus there are some new titles, the first person shooter from Insomniac games and whatever NaughtyDog make, lots of top games I want to play. If anything, I will be able to watch movies in High Definition using the blu-ray. They are promising that their console will deliver the kind of graphics they are showing us, and they are pretty resolute on that. There are quite a few reasons why I'm not willing to wait for Sony to release the PS3 before buying a next generation console. The main one is that the Xbox 360 will be available in the next few weeks and as #156 says there are a couple of games scheduled for the launch window that are genuinely exciting. Anyway I've summarised my thoughts below. Lets try and keep this friendly people. 1. I doubt that we will see the PS3 here in Europe any time before Q4 2006. There may have been some wooly promises made by Sony for a Spring 2006 global launch but going on past experience we'll get the thin end of the wedge as usual. There may be some announcements before the launch of the Xbox 360 but as I said below it's a case of a few weeks versus a few months. I'm an impatient kind of guy. 2. I genuinely think Microsoft launching the Xbox360 aggresively early combined with Sony's well documented financial troubles are forcing Sony's hand regarding the launch of the PS3 and I think the games available at launch will suffer as a result. With none of the usual suspects due for an update the prospect of a Tekken Tag style Tekken 5.5 doesn't really inspire me to buy the console at launch. 3. They have yet to show a single IP of note that looks like it will be ready for the launch. The lack of playable code so far leads me to this conclusion. All the games that everyone is hyping up (MGS, DMC, GT5 etc.) according to Sony are in the early stage of development. Again the prospect of playing those games in the future doesn't inspire me to but the console at launch. As I've said before for me games sell consoles not hardware specifications so I'd like to close by saying that your comment about emotions clouding peoples judgement can just as easily be applied to you. You didn't mention a single game you're looking forward to in your post and to me that says quite a lot. Peace. 161 -

Microsoft, which on any other day would tell you how inferior the Apple CPU is to their own, Intel-based bedmate, is going around the world unveiling their new Xbox on a black counter which, hidden within, houses essentially two Apple G5 computers. I'm sorry - I needed to start with that. Specifications and technological analyses are, at best, useless. At worst, they are an insult to anyone with even the slightest capacity for independent thought. It is never about the specs, or the numbers, or the "raw power". To me, personally, the PS2 is better than the Xbox. The Xbox has a better CPU - the Xbox has a better GPU - the Xbox probably even has a better fan. But, as an avid gamer and tech guru, all of that really doesn't matter. What does matter, in my opinion, is that the next-generation wave of consoles truly do represent a new generation. It is easy for technological systems and devices to fall into a pattern of "rehash syndrome" - updating and upgrading existing products (yesterday's products) and pretending that they therefore represent new ideas (today's products). On the brink of the release of Xbox 360, PS3, and the Nintendo Revolution, the current-gen Xbox, PS2, and GameCube are all yesterday's products. The battle between next-gen systems is not about the numbers (though, the PS3 does boast far better specs - for those of you who actually lend weight to this fact). To me, it is about which console will truly usher in a new generation. To me, the best console is not the one that makes yesterday's tech reusable today - the best console is the one that makes tomorrow's tech attainable today. The Xbox 360 will be nice - better graphics, better design, better interface - but in reality, it is little more than an upgrade to the current-gen Xbox. Improving graphics, performance, speed - such is the "rehash syndrome" technology trap that so many developers and system designers so easily fall into. Consider, now, the PS3. First, we have Cell. There is a lot of technical jargon that could be thrown in here, but I'll spare you (and myself). The important thing about Cell is that it redefines decades-old "theory" about what a CPU should be. Everything - from the way it queues processes, to the way it handles memory, to the way it interacts with other key components, such as the GPU - all of it is revolutionary. Indeed, it is safe to assume that Cell will be the basis for a brand new line of chipsets that truly reinvent the CPU for every device, from PC's to video game consoles to even your coffee-maker. The efficiency and, dare I say, grace with which the Cell will operate will truly open up a plethora of new, previously unseen doors through which designers can explore. Xbox, on the otherhand, is simply using a more advanced modern-day processor (again, one chiefly modelled off competitor Apple's PowerPC line). A good way to assess the performance of these next-gen systems is to compare them to current top-of-the-line PCs. The X360 will, in truth, be using a processor that rivals the best in PC CPUs (all things being equal). The PS3, however, will be using a processor that is, at present, far more advanced and powerful than any available PC CPU. PS3 will introduce a truly next-gen CPU - X360 will "reintroduce" a current, albeit slightly upgraded CPU. Next, let us look at graphic power. The PS3 GPU ("RSX") is, at present, twice as powerful as the most advanced currently available PC GPU. The X360 GPU (a remotely customized ATI project) is about as powerful as an upper-mid level PC GPU. Sony is taking an unprecedented step AHEAD of the PC world, introducing a GPU that, for the first time in console history, will actually force PC chip-makers to play catch-up. Microsoft is merely borrowing an existing GPU and adding a few sparks. Again, in my humble opinion, this demonstrates how Sony is thinking about tomorrow, whereas Microsoft is content with the technology available today. Finally, we'll consider media. There has been a lot of heated debates over Sony's BD-ROM format (Blu-Ray Disks, one of two rival High-Definition, Next-Gen "DVD" medias under development). Many Microsoft fan-boys have gone on record saying that they would rather stick with the admittedly tried and true DVD format then venture a risk with a new, sure-to-be proprietary format. Again, I have to ask - in the battle of "NEXT-GEN" systems, which of these formats truly offers a 'NEXT-GEN" quality? The PS2 uses DVD. So does the current Xbox. In my opinion, a next-gen console that reuses a current-gen media format is, in truth, NOT a next-gen offering. Sony has made the decision to offer over and beyond what is available today - Microsoft would like to stick with what they've got. The BD format will usher in a new generation in media presentation - a Blu-Ray disk can truly be rendered in complete High-Definition, whereas DVDs often prove incapable. Sony is looking ahead to the real next generation, while Microsoft is still caught up in the nexus of today's current generation. The downside? Cost. Blu-Ray will cost more than DVD. Two of the most powerful GPUs stacked together will cost more than just one, good GPU. A new, reinvented CPU will cost more than a reused, unoriginal CPU. But that's the nature of technology. You PAY for next-generation technology. You PAY for thinner, faster laptops. You PAID more for DVDs than you did for VHS. You PAY for handheld computers, smart-phones, and PDA-GPS hybrids. You PAY for new technology. The offset has always been that it is generally worth it. It is better to spend a little extra money to get better, newer products. You'll spend less on the X360, but all you are getting is an upgraded Xbox. You'll spend more on the PS3, but in that case, you're getting a revolutionary new product that will truly usher in a new generation of technology. And yes, you'll pay a lot for it - it really comes down to where you want to be. Do you want to stay in this generation, or do you want to venture where the "next-gen" consoles are supposed to bring us - the future. In my opinion, X360 will be nice - but not next-gen. I just wanted to point out that it could be read that way. Anyway no offence intended and it's good to see things kept on the friendly footing. I have to say that regarding both Bluray and HD DVD I'm not entirely convinced that disc based systems are the future of video distribution at least. I admit that in a video game console the additional storage is a bonus but I've been swapping discs for years and I'm sure a few more years of in game exercise won't do me any harm. Also putting Bluray in the PS3 is an excellent idea from a business point of view as not only does it add to the next gen wow factor (as pointed out by 166) it also acts as a "Trojan Horse" to get the format established in the marketplace. The only drawback being the fact that the majority of PS3 consoles will in the early stage of the life cycle be connected to standard def TV's, thus negating the advantages of the format. I keep thinking back to the Minidisc and my experiences with my Minidisc walkman and can't help but get the feeling that the same thing might happen again. I bought a Minidisc walkman only to find it pretty much obsolete due to the massive upsurge in poularity of MP3 players. I just get the feeling that HD cable and Satelite broadcasting (potential especially in cable for pay and play on the latest releases)combined with increases in internet download speeds (microsoft media centre streaming HD playback through the Xbox 360? Who knows) could undermine both formats. It's just conjecture on my part. As has been stated before no one knows what's going to happen but the backing of big business doesn't guarantee success. All the games just have smoother graphics(and that they are also plastky looking).....thats about it.....Microsoft tried to hard to hurry up and make a system and really didn't look to making a "NEXT GEN" system........ You can relate Microsoft's Xbox360 so well to the Sega DreamCast.... The XBox360 will sell very well this christmas but soon, like the DreamCast sales will plumet and the PS3 will rise and take over as the "REAL NEXT GEN SYSTEM" I am sure as time continues and right before the launch of the 360,... Sony will release more videos and show playable demos that will prove all of this information to be true........People that are undecided or might have bought a 360 will have time to save up and righten their mistake.... There's clearly loads of stuff missing from this demo and I cant wait to see the finished game. 206 -

The entire world was speculating that the Sony machine would come out at the same price as the Sega Saturn, perhaps alot more considering the power advantage and new technologies under the hood. So dont expect to see any major difference bettween the two systems until second half of 2007, if one is more powerfull then the other we will see it then. On paper PS3 is more powerfull then XBOX360 but and i say but it is more how you use what you've got that is important, i am not sure my grandma in a ferrari would drive faster then me in my toyota!!! One thing that could shake things up is Nintendo's desire to change the way gaming goes. Their remote is a good start i hope they will keep pushing that way.I would love to see more inovative ideas like so and hope they will make some games more attractive to older youth/adult. Bassically nothing is won for all side and only time will tell. For my part I am still questionning myself on wich one to buy, I like the extra power and cell architecture (wich is great if you have a couple of hour to waste reading programmers manual to realy understand it) but price might turn me off if to expensive. Wich buy the way is no reason, cell processor are cheaper to produce cause they are a much simpler processor, samsung came with a technology that brings the cost of production of blu-ray at about the same as DVD.It should cost the same as an XBOX360 to produce so SONY is full of it if they sell it more. 279 -

IBM is producing the xenon only for XBOX cause it is only suittable for that. And since they will probably produce more cell then xenon the cost will be reflected as the same. Also do you realise what you just said... sticking 3 core together it is not as simple as that you cannot produce 3 chip and put them on the same dye and expect them to work just like that. you have to redesign the complete core of the processors in order for them to work properly and effectivly (that is why it is called an "Custom IBM PowerPC-based CPU"* Please note the POWERPC-BASED (*the name was taken from XBOX web site) base means it is not a PowerPC ). So both need their asembly line redesign for those processor. I will conceed that it may be simpler for IBM but not as simple as you seem to think. And cost wise the is much less componnent in the cell that is why i wrote "simpler processor". Playstation ExpoUnregistered - Cynical Gamer 10.12.2005 15:13 I for one think that the Playstation Expo in Akihabara is a good thing. Sony have so far dominated the agenda of the next gen by twisting the early perceptions of it towards the technical capabilities of both machines. If they are going to be showing playable code at this event this is the moment of truth that all the single console zealots have been waiting for. If they show no playable code or what they do show turns out to be substandard (equal to or less technically impressive than the E3 Xbox 360 code) then that is a win for Microsoft. If however the early code on show does turn out to have the next gen wow factor that they have promised then that is a win for Sony. Either way it will hopefully bring an end to the continual tech spec flame wars that are blighting this generation of hardware before it even gets off the ground. Hopefully after this event there will be some games to discuss for the PS3 and there will be something more exciting than quick and dirty ports of franchises like Tekken and Gran Turismo to look forward to. For me a lazy line up of tired old franchises will do more to put me off buying at launch than anything. 291 -

I will wait on PS3 to show me something to support these claims but right now Sony has not shown me anything besides a flashy cinamatic of MGS4 which was realtime but not representing gameplay. The argument in favor of this price point is that the Revolution will be the least powerful of the three consoles, and will require game developers to significantly modify games in order to achieve cross-platform playability due to the Revolution’s unique controller and reduced power. But could it sell for $99? Examining recent comments made by Nintendo president Saturo Iwata seems to indicate that this is possible. Besides being technically superior in almost every way the PS3 also has a far larger customer base than does the 360 and only a moron would argue that. Also, if you realy take a good look at 360 game and Xbox games, you'll see that the 360 is not really nexgen, but instead an Xbox 1.5 of sorts. As of this weekend I have gotten a refund on my 360 preorder and am patiently waiting for PS3 preorders to start. I'm strongly advising you, the Xbox 360 is not what you think it will be. PS3 And RevolutionUnregistered - TK 11.01.2005 04:21 Things that stand out in the next gen: Two HDTV outputs (PS3) Eyetoy (PS3, think XBox is copying this) BlueRay (PS3) Revo Controller (Nin Revo) Wireless Controllers (all) Wireless networking (all) It clearly shows which companies are innovating - Sony and Nintendo MS just copied and is trying "more of the same" - no show stopper Oh - maybe they have one innovation - use the cash stash of Billions and try to lower the price until you can bankrupt the innovators and take the market away from them... and then raise the prices for monopoly style profits when you get there. Then... the innovation (copying what others innovated) stops and prices becomes more and more with EULA that require pay-per-play etc. I think there is another force that will affect this... OpenOffice, Linux and MySQL. Why? Because they are low cost or free, and they strike at the heart of where MS gets their cash stash to afford 2 Billion US$ losses on a console generation without breaking a sweat in their bid to oust the current market leaders. If these outside forces start eating into MS profits, then expect BillG to yank the loss making XBox. Dont even expect them to think about making a profit this generation - they are just trying to kill the competition as loss leader for monopoly style profits when they have the road open. 311 -
Must HavesUnregistered - TK 11.01.2005 04:24 For me the must haves (BlueRay, Nin Controller, kick-ass performance, media convergance) means that I will have to get two consoles. PS3 for BluRay and some MGS4 etc, and Revolution for that great innovative controller. XBox360 just don't have any exclusive "must have" item. Add Comment |
