The Official Playstation Magazine reported that Sony has decided not to use a central online gaming service like Xbox Live for the PS3. Instead the PS3 online service will be similar to what we have today on the PS2.
This will come as bad news for many who had hoped for a unified system similar to Microsoft’s Xbox Live, which are one of the main selling points for the new Xbox 360. This means that gamers still have to keep track of multiple online accounts, and that it will be up to each and every publisher to decide what kind of online features their games will have. Though this gives the publisher more freedom, and could be an advantage for some games, many of us have been hoping for a unified online service for the PS3 and it can be somewhat hard to understand Sony’s decision, especially after Nintendo finally also have shown interest for online gaming. However, how this strategy will work out for Sony will first be known when the console is out, and it could prove to be less of a problem than many of us think. Add Comment  1 -

I personally canceled my live service as I liked the PS2 online games better. This also allows for better servers being used when companys upgrade for thier games. I for one was not looking forward to a monthly subscription to play the few games I do online. Don't forget that only 10% of the people that have XBOXs have xbox live accounts. I think this leaves sony in a good position that they can always impliment the online community at any time through a download or even a better more transparent system through the harddrive with Linux installed. 3 -

Unregistered - Indica 11.04.2005 10:25 first of all i cant stand ps2 online games there is too much lag and i use cable so its not that... live is flawless... i had my xbox when it first come out and my live was free even when they started charging... i myself wouldnt mind playing flawless games online for a small fee plus they have the silver accounts now too.... that 10% is bull crap i know alot of people who have live just not highspeed and use others connections and vise versa.... you can make the best of this news all you want by saying its free and it wont lag but i for a fact know if they dont improve nothing between the ps2 and ps3 online then noting will change it will still suck 6 -

This is a shock to me, I even looked up the source, it's from a site called gamesfirst.com and they said they've reported this from Official Playstation Magazine that sony has decided not to use a centralized online plan. I know I am a sony fan boy but it is hard for me to believe this, I want to see quotes from the artical. I want to read the whole artical so I can know exactly why sony would choose this decision. But I started to think, It would be very nice to have a unified online stratagy but sony still can have one without it. Besides having to register for every game to play online, the online play can still be good, the things ps2 needed for online play was a headset that worked for all games and a harddrive for downloadable content. Then it will be up to the deveopers to incoporate the abilty to find friends, stats, and download content and things like that. If sony does decide to go by this stratagy, they should really think it over because although ps3 online will be so much better than ps2 online, it won't compete with xbox live with the single gamertag across all games. I still can't beilive sony would not go with the unified online plan, but just give me a headset to talk, and some downloadable content and I'm good. I just feel that if sony Made a strong centralized online sevice that the ps3 would compete with 360 in every category. Because with the ps2 and xbox, xbox fanboys could brag about the graphics in games, and xbox live but if ps3 will have a unified online service the xbox fanboys will have nothing to brag about with the 360. Yeah sony has dropped a few things and counting, but I mean deep down I still think it's going to be an awesome gaming machine after all thats really what it is, if I were a sony fan i'd worry if they start losing software support. The live servers maintained monitored and optimized to create the best online gaming experience possible on a console. With all the new enhancements to the service it will be even better on 360. $50.00 a year(not per month) is the cost of one game (not even one game now..darn next-gen price inflation). Cheating isn't nearly as rampant (any ever played Socom online?), Voice chat with every game, The games you can't play online have downloadable content (for the most part). Its a great service. With PS2 online...servers are almost always lagging, cheating is the norm, hardly any voice chat and only a handful of games support ps2online and even fewer of them are worth playing online. For both PS3 and X360 you will have to pay a fee for MMORPG's (unless msoft hooks us gamers up..since we are already paying) because that's how they have always been. PS2 online I believe I had it for a week before I sold my network adapter and play all my online games through xbox live exclusively. PS2's network was hot doo-doo..unfortunately it looks like PS3's is poised to be NEXT-GEN ultra powerful HOT DOO-DOO. Oh well there is always xbox live. I do want to play that DC comics MMORPG on PS3 though. As well as the Marvel MMORPG for x360. 33 -

It seems every time one of the systems have a disadvantage all the fans rabidly defend the systems fault. Such as the 360 not supporting Blu Ray or HD-DVD clearly a disadvantage, but xbots will die telling you there is no advantage to having extra disc space, which is an idiotic thing to say. "I believe that KK is playing everyone to be a fool, here's why: PS3 will not be expensive: Kaz Hirai and Chatani said it would be 'competitive'), and I believe them over KK ("PS2 will be under $900"). When he said PS3 would be expensive he was laughing. They also told investors and partners that it will be less than 40 000yen ($368). Why will RSX cost more than R500? If anything it should be cheaper: no eDRAM, fixed royalties, no radical architecture (as yet....). Also the R500 is made up of two dies. Cell $6billion dev costs (including fabs) are split 3 ways to IBM Toshiba and Sony, HAVABlogbillion for Sony, thats $20 per cell, fixed dev costs (assuming 100 million cells made and sold, used just on PS3, not including PS4, TVs, PSP2, mobile phones etc). XeCPU will cost a similar amount to make as cell, because die sizes are not hugely different, extra transistors is not the defining factor in manufacturing costs, die size is. Plus Sony is one, if not the most experienced company in 90nm production (pioneered this production method more than 6 years ago with PS2), an area which MS and ATI have almost no experience in (the same goes for nVidia, which is the reason why they are using Sony's 90nm production method for the RSX). Another thing is that only 7 of the PS3 Cell's 8 SPEs are activated, meaning that if one SPE is malfunctioning Sony won't have to discard the CPU but just deactivate the malfunctioning SPE, unlike MS who will have to discharge their CPUs if just one of the PPC cores are malfunctioning. A wifi card costs $40 now, to a consumer, how much for Sony, at manufacturing costs? Less than half? Bluetooth is 2.4GHz tech, the same as the 360's system and will most likely be the same price to manufacture as X360 solution. Sony do not have to pay Ericsson (the creators of Bluetooth) royalties, as Sony own Ericsson, MS will have to Logitech. Blu-Ray is the only real cost and will not be $100 more, all it is is a violet laser as well as a red laser, there will be no huge change in manufacturing costs. Stand alone players will be a $1000, just like DVD players were when PS2 came out, and how much was PS2 at launch ($300). Another important thing is that Sony isn't alone in the BD R&D, all the biggest hardware companies (minus Toshiba) are sharing the R&D cost and experience in gaining the most cost-efficient production method. When the PS3 hits the shelves the production cost of BD drives will be much less than today and the money lost on the PS3 drives will be compensated by the gain from selling BD movies and 1080p TVs (HD-DVD only run 720p resolution meaning that Sony wouldn't be able to sell its 1080p TVs to people with HD-DVD players). Another important medium which needs mentioning is the memory-stick, the PS3 will make this medium much more common which will make more people buy Sony's memory-stick products like video-cams, car phones, MP3 players and so on. I cannot see what all the doom and gloom stories are based upon. If someone can point out where I am wrong with logic rather than speculation, please do. Please do not use analysts ideas, they do not know squat, (PS2 and PSP=$500 at launch)." The controller and the console were only concept designs plus that guy carmack was talking about the old tools, the new tools arrived in october, and the unreal Engine and game Embryo 2.1 is going to make game development easier. This announcement may not be legit, because I'm sure Sony understands online gaming is going to be a huge part of nextgen gaming. I'm just tired of hearing people say PS2 does not have online games. Don't get me wrong the XBox service is more robust and the XBox had more online enabled games, but the PS2 offered online options with most of their sports titles and Socom 1-3 had a huge online community with headset support. Honestly, I don't like the idea of having to pay for online services, but I do like downloadable game content. Also, having a universal friends list is nice, but not absolutely neccessary. If Sony pushes the developers to enable online gaming with their titles and offer downloadable content via the hard drive for free we have no real worries. I think the XB360 online strategy is nice, but not a system seller I can do all of the extra features via my PC. In conclusion I just played the 360 demo on a HD display and was impressed, but not floored by the visuals. I think both consoles have a bright future, but the PS3 is without a doubt nextgen and I highly doubt they completely ignore online play. Peace. 120 -

In the current generation of consoles my collection of Xbox games is the size of my Gamecube and PS2 collection combined. That's because I and I'm sure a large proportion of multi console gamers always buy multiformat games on the Xbox because of the improved graphics. Move forward to the next generation and based on everything I know about the Xbox 360 and the PS3 I don't believe their will be much of a difference in graphics between the two consoles. Certainly not as much as exists in the current generation. If this news turns out to be true I can see Live becoming the deciding factor in the next generation. The fact that multi console gamers choose to buy multiformat games on the Xbox this generation didn't really matter to Sony as they had such a large market share that they could afford to absorb it. If as everyone apart from the fanboys on this site expect Microsoft manage to make big inroads into Sony's market share dominance in the next generation and Live becomes the deciding factor for multi console gamers Sony can only blame itself. 228 -

The thing about it all its that the 360 would be more for hardcore gamers, where as the ps3 would be for the more casual gamer. The 360 will have a sh!t load of pc titles as well as multiplatform titles, I do hope they have so nice exclusive titles. I had the ps2 the last time around so it was only natural for me to get the 360 this time. Tho I can afford, I dont see me buying both consoles. However, if microsoft starts get rocky with it's software support then obviously im going where ever the games are. But as it stands, the 360 is where it should be. And im very happy with my choice. Oh and the whole online thing, it's a great move by microsoft, yeah it's to make them money however online gaming is infact addictive and fun. So many people I know will have the ps3 so if I wanted I would always have access to it, but right now especially because of live myself and a whoollle gang of people, friends and family are going for the 360. People like to feel connected, at all times and live is going to infact be a instrument in that. Like I'd be able to play my daughters via live, from IL, while they are in texas. That's a blessing in it self. So you understand, the overall experience MS has to offer is infact something I would really enjoy having. Ps2 being underpowered compared to the xbox and even Game Cube , but out selling both of them by 3 times. Cell is not the key to winning the console war and as much as some of you hate it and deny it this online thing will hurt Sony, not bluntly and suddenly but over time it will be a hemerage in the PS3's side. Online Play will grow in the next gen, more and more people are getting broadband service. Even Nintendo sees a great future in online gameing. It will take an even balance of hardware, software, and services to win and Microsoft is currently ahead in that department IMO. They have more than enough hardware to crankout aimaising games, their are alot of great games lined up for the platform, and their taking the already great xbox live and making it better. Sony is realying to heavily on the "cell", and they are almost abandoning the sevice part of the puzzle by not offering an online service competable with xbox live. Sony has hardware and software but that only 2/3 of the puzzle. Xbox360 has 3/3 of the puzzle. Xbox360 has a lagitament shot at becoming the #1 console. Also i have seen the gears of war trailer and i have to say that it is just as good as the mgs4 trailer that i gave seen. Other games like killzone look great but are not real in game material. By the way how do you know that it will be better besides specs that i really dont think any of us know what they mean? Games will determine the greatness of the system. They dont even scratch the surface of what the 360 is cabable of. COD2 looks good and palys great but is basically the same as the PC version. King Kong is a port of the PC version. Devs havent had enough time with the system yet to utilize it. Im looking forward to xbox360 and the titles that will come after the new year. A unified service will hamper this as they will obviously try to lock in the console to only play with their peers and not with other platforms. One can expect a number of online portals that will host game servers, and they will most prabably be cross platform - actually - it will be inevitable. A unified service pretends that that specific console is the only type in the universe. I would much rather prefer a cross platform portal. All the XBox fans (what are they doing here by the way?) should wake up and realise that the Internet was not suddenly rendered obsolete just because MS decided to launch MSN. In the Xbox fanclub reasoning the rest of the internet should have died off when the OS manufacturer launched their own online service. Sorry - did not happen. And the same it will be with online gaming. The console manufacturer will eventually not have the bulk of the online games and not serve the majority of content. IF that is so then you must believe that MS will offer every MP3 and movie out there on XBL, which they wont. The PS3 will play online as good as any PC out there. And third party portals will pop up all over the show. You can not seriously think that a "unified online service" will suddenly be able to handle all online games? Or that you will not get the scenario that Battlefield 7.5 will only be played for Xbox owners on XBL and for PC owners on another server and that they would never want to join games regarding of waht console they own or that console their opponents own. The unified online service argument is crap. Its presence or absence does not magicly make the online capabilities of the hardware appear or disappear. The console is a piece of hardware. It is not as technical as having all three systems, or playing 24/7. Stop taking things to the extreme. Also, why is everyone a fanboy when they have an opinion on which console they support. I do support the Xbox360 because I have seen that it is real and I like the games and Xbox live. I know absolutely nothing but PS3 except it will use blu-ray and cell. No real game play videos yet! Also, Xbox live is a great service and just because 10% of gamers use it now, doesn't mean that many more won't go online. To add, 10% is a great number since they started with zero, they were the first unified online service, and that 10% is about 2 million people, if not more now. 406 -

As a result of not having xbox live when the console came out there was a huge part of the market who didn't use live. My prediction on the percentage of xbox live users for the xbox 360 will jump from 10% to 30%. And that's a lot of people. Exspecially since ps3 won't have live more people will rely on the xbox 360 for the ultimate online multiplayer experience. Even Nintendo the king of f**ups last gen is going this direction. I love the fact that I can get on xbox live and see the games my friends are playing and jump right on in with them, keep track of their scores in different games, have a online identity and that follows me to every game I play, have multiple zones of play so I don't have to deal with racists, team killers, and immature bratts. The list goes on and on. Truly, something like Xbox live is a more powerful feature than some non proven dvd format, Blue Ray. Don't get me wrong I want more space on my dvd's but that isn't why I buy a game console. I will buy all consoles but this little tid bit of news, if it is true, will only make me prolong the purchase of the PS3 and buy fewer games for it, especially the cross platform games. It baffles me that anyone could consider themselves a fairly serious gamer and not lament this decision by Sony. Sure not everyone plays online but the benifits of playing online are so huge that it only makes sense for the casual gamer. 408 -
