SpeedTree RT, the game industry's premier real-time foliage middleware, will be made available for PS3 game title developers under a Tools & Middleware license agreement concluded recently with Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.
Interactive Data Visualization, which developed and launched SpeedTreeRT in late 2002, will license the SpeedTree SDK for PS3 at $9,995US per title. IDV also announces the availability of a free, fully-functional evaluation version of the middleware for potential customers who wish to try it out first. The evaluation kit includes plug-ins for 3ds max and Maya, the fully-functional real-time foliage software and the highly versatile SpeedTreeCAD foliage editor and creation tool. "SpeedTree's ability to quickly bring beautiful, wind-blown and efficient foliage to real-time titles makes it ideal as a middleware choice for the ground-breaking graphical excellence of "PLAYSTATION 3"," said IDV Vice President Michael Sechrest. "We welcome developers of "PLAYSTATION 3" titles to evaluate SpeedTree if they want to give their players truly next generation outdoor environments." SpeedTreeRT delivers highly realistic trees and plants, with adjustable wind effects, user-configurable and seamless LOD transitions, and an included library of hundreds of tree, plant and marine models representing more than 170 core species. SpeedTreeRT includes SpeedTreeCAD, a Windows application used to create and edit animated trees in real-time. Unregistered - Futurekubik 11.16.2005 11:39 I thought I might at least make a real post here as nobody else seems to have bothered. This tree rendering software seems like a very good idea for developers whether for sony games OR the competition. It could mean it shaves off vital development time for the makers of next gen games, which look likely to be more time consuming to create whatever platform they'll be released on. It raises the question though, does this mean that many games that we see next gen will feature VERY similar looking trees?, even when the quality of the trees clashes with the graphical quality of the rest of the games the tree software has been implememnted in? Even worse - could many lazy developers eager to release their shoddy film/t.v. tie-ins in time for xmas or quickly use the software as a shortcut in an already rushed and un-loved creation process? Could a calling card of crappy rushed to the shops games be the presence of these 'copy and paste' trees? Unregistered - Dude 11.16.2005 12:05 Blah, the trees are great in graphics and all, but i don't think gaphics add to the games very well. Maya programs is awesome yeah but, caring too much on the graphics can totally kill a game's plot and storylines. We need STORIES and BATTLE SYSTEMS not spectacles. Bill Gates 11.16.2005 12:19 You should all check out that tree website it's really cool. Games will never be the same again. Unregistered - THAT GUY 11.16.2005 12:29 I believe with this there is also a random tree generator. It will create random tree forms based on the species you select. Which means that every tree will be different. Unregistered - WebBug 11.16.2005 15:30 It's up to the creative director to come up with a story and a plot it usually takes a while for them to think things through considering they have to think of everything to make the game possible. Unregistered - WebBug 11.16.2005 15:34 I wonder if you can cut trees down and see the rings. Unregistered - . 11.16.2005 16:52 Thank god mod. whare have you been the last 3 weeks. This is how you make good loocking games fast. Thare should be more like this software. Unregistered - Haaaahaaaa 11.16.2005 17:16 Yeah, PS3 fans can keep talking about CGI and Middleware while we play with our XBOX 360.... Idonotknow 11.16.2005 17:37 And so the great genre known as "Simulated Tree Chopping" was born. Idonotknow 11.16.2005 17:39 The first one is to be named "Sim Lumberjack Tourney Xtreme". All will play and all will love. Vivicious 11.16.2005 17:40 This software is there for developers to have an easier way to create all unique trees, you won't be seeing double =P Check out Oblivion for example, these screens hardly do the software justice, in the hands of the right developers (Like Bethesda so far) these look just awesome. The reason they seem "shiny/plastic" to some people is the influence of Epic's U3 Engine by the way, not the software itself. Unregistered - WebBug 11.16.2005 18:06 Vivicious you seem to be the only person who has sense of what your talking about on this site. Unregistered - Ox 11.16.2005 18:11 No one would waste the time of day making a lumber jack sim. Unregistered - Evil Game Dealer 11.16.2005 18:15 If their was a lumber jack Sim it would be weird to be some guy chopping trees for a living in the middle of nowhere. Unregistered - Evil Game Dealer 11.16.2005 18:32 I know it's a joke but come on a lumber jack sim Unregistered - Furious 11.16.2005 19:21 Agreed Vivicious is one of the few people who post valid info on this forum. Anyone really interested in learning about development and want to seriously discuss the PS3 should go to the E-mpire forums. Fortunately E-mpire forums do not allow people to post pointless threads... The point of this news is to emphasize the importance of middleware to ease next-gen game development. This is a good move in the right direction and the foilage created from this plugin is impressive. Since next-gen development will primarly increase art development cost new tools improving asset development will be appreciated by developers. If Sony stays committed to this approach developers will discover the PS3 will be more development friendly than the PS2. I would like to see a really good Open GL shader library released... Peace Unregistered - interesting 11.16.2005 19:36 INTERESTING ARTICLE ABOUT PS3 http://reviews.cnet.com/Sony_PlayStation_3/4864-10109_7-31355103.html?ctype=msgid&messageSiteID=7&messageID=1244581&cval=1244581 Medaitor 11.16.2005 19:39 It's a shame metal gear solid 3 was made for the ps2 instead of the ps3. there is a game that could have really benefited from softwere like this. who knows mabey metal gear solid 4 will have some jungle/forst areas. Retard 11.16.2005 22:22 That interesting website from CNet was from June 15, 2005 .......... Kinda old news if it has any facts in it at all. Unregistered - amed 11.17.2005 00:35 The engine looks really amazing but i dont see how having a tree engine will greatly effect next gens games to the next level. How often do you stare at a tree? it will really just slow down games and generate longer loading time. Unregistered - Danielson 11.17.2005 03:33 Imagine if Hideo Kojima Used this in MGS Snake Eater. Unregistered - yur mom 11.17.2005 08:46 At least we know the trees will be nice Unregistered - Fossil 11.17.2005 11:25 Lush environments are cool, imagine your in the jungle and the sun is shinning through trees blended with a few shadow effects that would be okay. Unregistered - Fossil 11.17.2005 11:30 Playing soft music and the violin music adds a sense of emotion in games that have lush environments. Unregistered - THiS KiD RiGHT HeRe 11.17.2005 11:33 i know its off the topic because i dont want to talk about trees but i heard that the reason the ps3 controller looks the way it does is because the dual shock 2 design wasnt made by sony...but i dont think that'll stop 3rd party developers from making one.....i got a usb adapter for the PC that lets me use the ps2 controller for emulators and stuff so im hoping that it'll work on the ps3 usbs...... Unregistered - ! 11.17.2005 13:04 Yes...I hope youll still be able to use a dualshock 2 on the PS3... The final design is still under development...so you never know. I like the sound of this software- imagine Killzone 2 lives up to its expectations, and theres a forest section in which bullets damage trees just like in real life... [Foams at mouth] And imagine throwing a grenade in a forest...its beyond my imagination what PS3 will deliver... All I can say is that PS3 will utterly destroy the Xflop and the Revolution. Unregistered - WILDATTORNEY 11.17.2005 17:51 For your reading education: The man behind Metal Gear Solid, Hideo Kojima speaks his mind on Xbox 360. Well known for his solid support of Sony and their PlayStation console makes it clear the PlayStation 3 *isn't* more powerful then the Xbox 360. Those who saw the Metal Gear Solid 4 videos, which were impressive immediately leaped up in Sony's defence claiming it looked better then any Xbox 360 title and that the PlayStation 3 was more powerful - (I'm assuming they haven't seen Gears of War). Well Kojima says otherwise and that the Xbox 360 can easily handle any PS3 game. This is yet another blow against Sony, one of their most prized developers saying their console is no more powerful then the Xbox 360, which can run anything the PS3 can run. Add that into the things Microsoft have which Sony can't match, services - like Xbox Live and all the cool stuff that goes with that such as score tracking in every game etc (look at our Gamercards on the bottom-right of the page and here's Xbox's Exec J Allard's card - where's Ken's scores?) then we come to software support, a good solid launch despite a very hectic last few months with far more games in development then the PS3. Sevir 11.17.2005 21:16 yes! in the next gen the xbox can attempt to compete with it and run game s that the ps3 is capable of, but just because a renouned developer said thatthe xbox can handle doent mean that there is not a differnce in power. if kojima was to run MGS4 on xbox software just as he did tih the ps3 and place them side to side there would be a difference.... and u can see this for ur self... with the armored core 4 trailers for both ps3 and Xbox 360, they are both the same game but there is huge diffences for both for one the frame rate at witch the xbox trailor was running at was slower in comparison to the ps3. and i'm not being bias because i'm a ps3, but it's in looking... the details werent that far off for both but the frame rate of the presentation of both video really left u wondering if this was the same game being compare if kojima-san was basing his comment on graphic then he is right... the xbox has the potential the haul around video games because not many game look that differnet... gears of war for the Xbox is running on final Devoplment kits of the Xbox 360 and it looks awesome and i'm quite sure if it were on Ps3 the graphics wouldn't be that much greater... i'd say that the biggest thing in that case is frame rate... if Gears of war were on Ps3 it would be running at a much faster frame rate which would make graphical interfaces seemless, so kojima-san remark aint a blow to sony or a hype up to Xbox as it stand the ps3 will still delive a better quality in games as far as both graphics and frame rate goes... the rest is all just a wait and see.... Unregistered - CLowe 11.18.2005 16:59 Just what exactly does what Kojima said about MGS4 have to do with new tree-building middleware for the PS3? Nothing. At. All. Any and all posts regarding it should be deleted by the mod, and discussion should be kept to the topic at-hand, instead of trying to turn something into a console fanboy war it isn't.
